Streetworks and Roads

Overview

On this course you’ll gain the skills and knowledge to carry out work to the standards required by the NRSWA 1991 (the legal framework for street works).

Under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, the installation, renewal, maintenance and inspection of underground apparatus in any street or road must be under the control of competent people. If you are working, or supervising works, in the highway you could be required to hold one or more of the Street Works qualifications, depending on your job role. There are sixteen units of competence for Operatives and Supervisors.

Successful candidates will be registered on the Street Works Qualifications Register.

Course structure

You will become competent in the supervision of manual excavation and reinstatement on the highway, including:

Unit 001 – Location and avoidance of underground services

Unit 010 – Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding; co-ordination procedures and code of practice

Unit 011 – Monitoring excavation in the highway; specifications, techniques, road types, materials

Unit 012 – Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials

Unit 013 – Monitoring reinstatement of non-bituminous sub-base and road-base materials

Unit 014 – Monitoring laying practices and reinstatement of bituminous materials; specification and types of materials

Unit 016 – Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete highways.

Course Elements

Duration:
5 days (3 days of training, 2 days of technical tests)
You will need a reasonable level of mobility and the ability to lift and move loads. You will also need a good understanding of spoken and written English. Please contact us if you have any concerns in this area.

Assessment and exams

Practical tasks and observation exercises, plus classroom-based theory including written assignments.

Operatives and supervisors learn on the same course to replicate a team environment.

Qualifications/certification

3 National Construction College certificate

3 City & Guilds 6156/01 or SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority)
